About Us

Green-tree is a working partnership between Green-tree and Yorkshire Water. For the last four years the two companies have been in discussions and developing how we could develop a sustainable synthetic topsoil.

Our History

The aim was to develop a consistent and sustainable product the landscape market would except and use instead of a natural soil. We needed to create a rooting medium that fulfils the role of landscaping topsoil that was suitable for the sustainable growth and establishment of trees, shrubs and grass. The product needed to promote healthy root growth for anchorage, is suitably aerated and drains and provides a sufficient source of available water and plant nutrient.

If Green-tree was to be a success we needed to achieve a number of factors.

• A consistent source of organic matter
• A consistent source of aggregate / mineral content
• Monitored on site procedures
• Deliver a product, which exceeded the markets expectations
• Manufacture a consistent mix 365 days per annum.

We now have many years of production under our belt and believe we have achieved what we set out to do. In one year over 92% of all material sold was delivered to repeat customers.

By combining science and technology with conventional techniques we have developed topsoil that meets the ever-increasing demands of today's landscape industry.

We currently convert 33% of all Yorkshire Water's composted sludge, which is available to Green-tree soils. We aim to convert 100% of all Yorkshire Water's available composted sludge to Green-tree soils by the end of 2009.

Our Approach

We don't rely on guesswork when developing and recommending our products. The Green-tree name is about sustainable product development and robust quality control.

We won't recommend a product until we're satisfied that we understand the market needs. We have a testing programme in place to ensure you last load delivered is the same as the first. This way we ensure that the topsoil's we provide exceed your expectations.

Because at the end of the day our business isn't about simply supplying topsoil's; it's about developing long-term relationships with customers who appreciate the link between a technically based supplier of topsoil's and the ultimate success of the project.

gt green-tree topsoil is an award-winning topsoil, manufactured using organic compost, processed green garden matter and overburdened sand from quarries, all products which would otherwise hit landfill. The topsoil is a highly fertile and organic-rich material, compliant to BS 3882 standard, requiring no additional fertiliser for the first season, contains zero stones and has good water retention properties. Also as a manufactured topsoil, it provides consistency, unlike other "soils", as each load is a guaranteed constant quality.
