Green-tech Award Winning Topsoil
At Green-tech for the past 3 years we have been producing and developing a manufactured topsoil called "
Greentree", aimed at landscaping , gardening and general construction purposes, by utilising organic compost from
Yorkshire Water PLC, processed green garden matter collected from various Yorkshire Metropolitan councils and local quarried sand.
We submitted this recycled blend for the recent
National Recycling Awards and were delighted to be awarded the coveted
Environmental Product of the Year Award...not bad for a local business employing 21 people , when you consider some of the household names at the event included Tesco, Boots, Bovis Homes and Butlin's!
This award was in addition to the
Horticulture Week Awards 2006 "Highly Commended" achievement in their "
Most Outstanding Contribution to the Environment" category.
We have recently increased our production sites from an initial 2 in West Yorkshire, by adding additional sites in Blaydon, Tyne and Wear and Tamworth, Staffs, and have plans to develop the number of sites still further over the coming 12 months. We take the blended organic material, which has been fully processed, to two Tarmac quarries and then blend in overburden sand produced from these sites.
In each case we are helping utilise waste organic material from Yorkshire Water which would otherwise be either land-filled or added to agricultural land, processing green compost from Yorkshire Councils and helping Tarmac rid themselves of sand material which would otherwise be unfit for their purposes and would again be land-filled.
The end product is a highly fertile and organic-rich soil that requires no ameliorated additional fertilising for at least the first growing season, allowing plants to flourish during the establishment period. It offers zero weed content, with little or no stone, is compliant to BS3882 standard, and is highly workable in wet conditions whilst also enjoying good water retention properties.
Both the award recognitions reflect the efforts we have gone to in producing a consistent quality product from waste material and we have already moved in excess of 35k tonnes in the past 18 months with a projection for this to exceed 50k tonnes in the next 12 months.
Over 92% of landscape architects, landscapers and other users have gone on to re-order or specify for additional projects, reflecting the workability, fertility and quality of the soil. We have also been establishing and developing a network of "small load stockists" to better serve the domestic gardener and for landscapers with smaller projects to service.
Green-tech has over 13 years experience in the landscaping and forestry market and we are on target to provide over 50% of our portfolio of products or services from recycled or sustainable items by 2011.
"1 tonne of Greentree saves 140kg of greenhouse gas emissions"
