Award Winning Soils used for major regeneration project

ecobuild A massive 30,000 tonnes of "gt Greentree" topsoil has recently been used to assist in the redevelopment of the former Wath Manvers Colliery site in South Yorkshire.

The site, previously heavily contaminated with hydrocarbons as a result of the mining activity, will provide mixed-use facilities including distribution and warehousing plus a 9 hole golf course. The requirements for the development of the golf course included the need for a consistent high quality topsoil, delivered within a specified narrow time frame…not easy when there are 30,000 tonnes to be delivered!

"gt Greentree" was chosen because of several factors, and not least because it has previously been winner of the "National Recycling Award" for "Environmental Product of the Year", plus one of the 5 production sites Nationally was located less than 30 miles away, and being a manufactured soil the producers, Green-tech Ltd, were able to offer a consistent mix for every load, something not easy to offer with other sources of topsoil.

Furthermore the bulk density of the "gt Greentree" being 1cubic metre per tonne when compared to most soils at 1.6 cubic metre per tonne, resulted in a significant reduction in the number of wagons required to transport such a large quantity (around 750 less in this case) and so reducing the impact of traffic and emissions in the area during the delivery period.

The product has been produced and developed over the past 4 years between Green-tech Ltd of York and Yorkshire Water PLC in recognising a need to produce a quality product suitable for all general landscaping and construction needs, whilst ensuring that the base materials are from recycled and waste sources. It is blended from organic material from Yorkshire Water PLC, processed green compost from several Metropolitan Local Authorities and overburden sand from local quarries, resulting in a low odour peat-like material. By utilising the organic matter from Yorkshire Water PLC there has been a significant reduction in the amount of material that has been used on agricultural land or incinerated.

In addition to the 2006 National Recycling Award the product has been recognised by Horticulture Week and in 2 categories at the recent Construction News "Green Awards".
Green-tech will be on stand E123 at Ecobuild in February 2008.
